EXCURSION IN ATHENS

The history of the capital of Greece starts from the 5th century B.C., continues in the Roman and Byzantine times and makes it to today.

In the heart of the city you can find elements from all the different eras of history coexisting harmoniously. Ornate temples and monuments of the classical era and the Roman civilization, Byzantine churches and neoclassic buildings of the modern times form a beautiful setting that showcases the ceaselessness of the Greek culture throughout the centuries.

You can watch the Changing of the Guard of Evzones, in front of the Greek Parliament and the Pantheon. Then you will visit the Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro), where the Olympic Games took place in ancient times and the modern games were revived in 1986. You will admire buildings of extraordinary architecture, such as the “University”, the “Academy” and the “National Library” and will end up on the Acropolis. The Acropolis of Athens is the city’s trademark and you will surely be mesmerized by its location, the majestic Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike and the Erechtheion.

At the end of the tour you will have some free time. You can walk on cobblestone streets between traditional shops and neoclassic houses, at the foothills of Acropolis, in Plaka. In the open marketplace in Monastiraki, you can find everything you desire, souvenirs, traditional food, antiques, leather goods, clothing etc.

Green scenery, Byzantine chapels, picturesque villages and neoclassic architecture create a wonderful view, which gets complete adding the ancient Temple of Aphaia and the modern church of Saint Nektarios, a miraculous saint of the Orthodox Church. Before leaving the island, do not forget to buy fresh peanuts, which grow only in Aegina, and traditional sweets made of peanut.

SAILING ACROSS ISTHMOS

The Corinth Canal (Isthmos) is one of the largest construction projects in the history of Greece. Since ancient times many attempts to unite the two seas- Saronic and Corinthian Gulf- had been made, in order to avoid having ships sail around the Peloponnese. The hopeful plan of many great men eventually became a reality in 1893. The sailing across the canal is a one-of-a-kind experience.

DAY TRIP TO ARGOLIDA

(EPIDAVROS-MYKINES- NAFPLION)

The trip starts from Mykines, known by Homer. The vaulted tombs of renowned kings of the Trojan War, the Lion Gate, the Royal Palace and other archaeological findings constitute one of the greatest and most ancient civilizations that flourished in Greece.

The trip continues to Ancient Epidavros, known for its medical science and mostly for the ancient theater, famous for its excellent acoustics and harmonious proportions.

You will also visit Nafplio, an important historic town but also a modern resort. Its architecture resembles a mosaic of added centuries, as in it coexist Venetian fortresses, Turkish mosques, Christian churches, neoclassic buildings, heroes’ statues and more. You can enjoy a walk in the cobbled streets, do your shopping in the big market and taste your coffee or food by the sea, overlooking the Bourtzi.

ONE DAY TRIP TO ANCIENT CORINTH - NEMEA

One of the oldest cities in Greece, Corinth, extends from the Canal and beyond. Passing through the current city of Corinth, which is the economic and cultural center of the county of Corinth, you can see the ancient city built on a hill and on top of that hill its castle, Acrocorinth. By walking through the city you can get to know its long history, from the ancient times (Temple of Apollo) to the Roman times (roofed passages, public baths) and the Christian times, during which Apostle Pavlos (Saul) taught at its market. In the archaeological museum of the city will have the chance to admire interesting findings.

The tour continues in Nemea, known since the ancient years for organizing the great local games “Nemean”, but also known by a famous fable, according to which Nemea was the place where Hercules killed the terrifying lion, that had been devouring the state, and thus completed his first task. Furthermore Nemea is known for the production of red wine, which is one of a kind. You will have the opportunity to visit a local winery and learn how wine is made, try the delicate taste and buy wine for yourself or your loved ones.

TRIP TO KALAVRYTA

The trip starts from the monastery of Agia Lavra in a picturesque valley on the slopes of the mountains, which became the center of the Greek national liberation front. In the monastery are kept the Evangel - a gift to the Russian Empress Catherine II-, the relics of the saints, manuscripts on parchment and a unique collection of ancient books.

The next stop is the village of Kalavryta, a typical mountainous Greek village, in the alleys of which you can have a nice walk, buy fresh local products (jams, cheese, pasta) and enjoy a cooked meal, a fragrant coffee and fresh handmade desserts.

The last stop of the tour is the Great Cave, one of the most famous and ancient monasteries in Greece. According to legend, a miraculous carved picture of Virgin Mary, made of resin and wax, was accidentally found in a remote cave. There the monk brothers Simeon and Theodore founded the monastery, which today has a large number of values, a rare banner with a picture of three Byzantine emperors, a valuable cross and the relics of the saints.

TWO DAY TRIP TO DELFOI - METEORA

The tour begins with a passing through the picturesque village of Arachova, famous for its handmade carpets and other handicrafts. Then we meet Delphi, which in ancient times was considered the center of the world. There stood the temple of Apollo in whose name the oracle Pythia made the most famous prophecies. There you can also find the natural spring Krystallia, the water of which is said to have anti-aging properties, as well as an archaeological museum with amazing exhibits. (eg Charioteer)

You will have the opportunity to taste Greek cuisine in a traditional tavern and then continue to check in at the hotel in Kalambaka.

On the second day it is Meteora’s turn. Various monasteries are built on steep cliffs, which together form the second largest monastic unit in Greece. The access to them is special, as is done through narrow paths carved in the rocks or through bridges hanging over the void. We will visit two monasteries where you will have the opportunity to learn about the daily life of the monks, exploring ancient temples, murals and old pictures. In those monasteries are preserved ancient relics and priceless manuscript collection. On the way back there will be a short stop at the monument of Thermopylae.
