A world of  wine-tasting in Nemea

Nemea has a long history of 3000 years and is known worldwide for organizing great athletic games (equivalent to the Olympic Games), for the first labor of Hercules (he killed the terrible Nemean lion there) and for being the biggest wine making area in Greece, and especially for the production of a unique variety of red wine.

Nemea doesn’t need to create myths and traditions about its wine since its roots are deep in the soil of the area. The archaeological finds indicate that the “red wine making” has its roots in ancient times and show that the residents of the region were well aware of the secrets of wine making and especially of the variety “Agiorgitiko”, which is produced only in that area. “Agiorgitiko” wine is highly popular and beloved and not a few wine lovers come to the region just to taste its wonderful flavor. It is even said that it seems to contain all the beauty of the Mediterranean, as it is friendly, warm and reflects the light and passion of the Mediterranean temperament.

Whether you are an expert in wine tasting, or want to make your first contact with the flavors, we arrange a visit to a winery (or a series of wineries) and offer you a great tasting experience. The colors and essences of the wines mix with the delicate flavors of traditional dishes made with fresh ingredients of the Corinthian land and create a journey of pleasures. You will also have the opportunity to learn about wine making (from fruit harvesting to bottling) while closely following all the facilities of a winery.

We will finish our tour to Nemea with a visit to the archaeological site or to the Virgin of the Rocks, a monastery built into the mountain during the Byzantine period.

Arcadia region, a place of unique nature and spirituality

Mythology holds that Arcadia was home to the God Pan, the god of the wild, fields, groves and wooded valleys. In this virgin land rich in forests, nymphs and spirits, the natural and the supernatural coexisted harmoniously.

Dimitsana: The fog hovering over the gorge ascends towards Dimitsana, dimming the view of the town’s charming stone houses. The wind blowing past the rocks on either side of the Lousios Gorge entrance is the only audible sound. Visitors could well lose themselves in an imaginary world here if it weren’t for the village clock, which strikes every half hour, around the clock. Dimitsana is the most significant village of Gortinia because of its history, natural beauty and its cultural activity. Dimitsana’s amphitheatrical landscape is remarkable, and so is and the four-plex buildings that are built on the cliff by the Lagkadian masons. Luxuriant vegetation is everywhere and fresh air fills your lungs.

Stemitsa: Stemnitsa is a traditional dorp, built amphitheatrically contemplating the slopes of Mainalon and preserved in an exemplary way. Mountains And Nature Of Corinthia – One Day Tour

Driving past the peaks of the mountains Ziria and Helmos, we relish a scenic route filled with ex-traordinary natural beauty. Firstly, we meet the Lake Stymphalia where, according to Greek my-thology, the Stymphalian Birds used to live in and whose extermination constitutes the Hercules ‘s sixth labour.

Stymphalia is also the home to the first Environmental Museum in Greece which aims at promoting the love of humans for nature and their harmonious coexistence, while it is the first time that a mu-seum offers the opportunity to its visitors to observe closely the flora and fauna of the area. The Museum also informs the visitors about local traditions and customs trying to keep them untouched by the development of civilization.

We continue our trip to Doxa Lake (which means the lake of glory). In the middle 1990s, a dam, which was raised and constructed in the riverbed of Doxa Lake (in the northwest part of the basin), created a new water surface, the artificial Doxa Lake, which captures your interest and your admi-ration from the very first moment with its huge size and its clear blue waters. This beautiful lake is located in an altitude of 890 meters and is surrounded by green firs, pine and oak trees which reach the banks of the lake and create a picturesque “Swiss landscape” as it has been described by so many visitors. The highlight of this natural beauty is the small chapel of St. Fanourios, which is connected to the mainland by a thin stripe of land which literally floats on the water.

Finally, the villages of Ano, Mesea and Kato Trikala, in close distance one from another, constitute a favourite destination for a “weekend getaway” from the city offering very good infrastructure both in taverns and cafés, as well as accommodation. Planes, oak, walnut and chestnut trees compose a colourful natural scenery for all nature lovers travelling around the villages of Riza and Karia to the villages of Goura and Panorama of Feneos.
