Excursion in Athens

The history of the capital of Greece starts from the 5th century B.C., continues in the Roman and Byzantine times and makes it to today.

A world of  wine-tasting in Nemea

Nemea has a long history of 3000 years and is known worldwide for organizing great athletic games (equivalent to the Olympic Games), for the first labor of Hercules (he killed the terrible Nemean lion there) and for being the biggest wine making area in Greece, and especially for the production of a unique variety of red wine.

Nemea doesn’t need to create myths and traditions about its wine since its roots are deep in the soil of the area. The archaeological finds indicate that the “red wine making” has its roots in ancient times and show that the residents of the region were well aware of the secrets of wine making and especially of the variety “Agiorgitiko”, which is produced only in that area. “Agiorgitiko” wine is highly popular and beloved and not a few wine lovers come to the region just to taste its wonderful flavor. It is even said that it seems to contain all the beauty of the Mediterranean, as it is friendly, warm and reflects the light and passion of the Mediterranean temperament.

Whether you are an expert in wine tasting, or want to make your first contact with the flavors, we arrange a visit to a winery (or a series of wineries) and offer you a great tasting experience. The colors and essences of the wines mix with the delicate flavors of traditional dishes made with fresh ingredients of the Corinthian land and create a journey of pleasures. According to mythology and the poet Hesiod, Asclepius, God of Medicine, was born there and in his name the famous Asclepiion infirmary was built, one of the most famous health institutions of ancient Greece and the whole Mediterranean region, because of the many and serious cases that were cured there. The infirmary was the reason for the rapid development of the city and due to that, in the 4th century BC, the famous and worldwide known Ancient Theater of Epidaurus was built. This construction is known to be the most perfect sample of an ancient theater in Greece and one of the most amazing ones in the world, from a symmetry and perfect acoustics point of view.

Excursion In Loutraki Area

(Saint Patapios’s Monastery – Lake Vouliagmeni – Hera Temple – Lighthouse)

Just before the top of Gerania, built on the side of the mountain, stands the monastery of Saint Patapios, constructed in the 11th century. Guests can admire the wonderful view overlooking the Corinthian and the Saronic Gulf, and also the Byzantine frescoes preserved in the cave where the hermit saint used to live and where his relic still lies.

After the total relaxation from the visit to the monastery the trip continues to the foot of Gerania, where the mountain meets the blue waters of the Corinthian Gulf and creates a magical setting! This dreamy picture gets complete by the Melagkavi Cape, where one of the largest lighthouses of Corinth stands. The endless deep blue surrounding you and the one of a kind view of the cliffs will take your breath away, and then you will discover the ruins of the famous Temple of Hera, which dates back to 800 BC.

Kalavryta Day Trip

The trip to Kalavryta is a special experience for nature lovers and also for those who want to get to know a piece of the Greek history.

Arriving at Diakopto, a trip to your dreams awaits. Boarding the scenic train, the Cog Railway,you will go up on the green slopes of Helmos, a tour described as one of the six rarer train tours in the world. You will cross the beautiful gorge of Vouraikos and find picturesque villages dressed in green, the color of nature. The tour takes 60 minutes until you reach the beautiful village of Kalavryta.

Kalavryta is a typical mountainous Greek village, where you can walk around in the little streets, buy fresh local products (jams, cheese, pasta) and enjoy greek cuisine or fragrant coffee and fresh pastries.

Five kilometers southwest of Kalavryta, on a hillside, you will see the historic monastery of Agia Lavra, which was built in the 10th century and became the center of the national liberation fight of the Greek people. In the monastery they keep the gospel – a gift for the Russian Empress Catherine II, the relics of the saints, manuscripts on parchment and a unique collection of ancient books.

The last stop of the tour is “Mega Spileo” (the Great Cave), one of the most famous and ancient monasteries in Greece. According to legend, in a remote cave a miraculous carved image of Holy Mary was found by chance, made of resin and wax. At that point the monk-brothers Simeon and Theodore built the monastery, which today has a large number of valuable assets, a rare banner with a picture of three Byzantine emperors, a precious cross and the relics of the saints.

Meteora – Delphi Two Day Trip

The tour begins with a passing through the picturesque village of Arachova, famous for its handmade carpets and other handicrafts. Then we meet Delphi, which in ancient times was considered the center of the world. There stood the temple of Apollo in whose name the oracle Pythia made the most famous prophecies. Mystras, the ‘wonder of the Morea’, lies in the southeast of the Peloponnese. The town developed down the hillside from the fortress built in 1249 by the prince of Achaia, William II of Villehardouin, at the top of a 620 m high hill overlooking Sparta.

The Franks surrendered the castle to the Byzantines in 1262, it was the centre of Byzantine power in southern Greece, first as the base of the military governor and from 1348 as the seat of the Despotate of Morea. Captured by the Turks in 1460, it was occupied thereafter by them and the Venetians. After 1834 the inhabitants of Mystras gradually started to move to the modern town of Sparta leaving only the breath-taking medieval ruins, standing in a beautiful landscape.

Mystras, the best-preserved example of medieval walled town in the Greek region, is today a standing ghost city that fascinates the modern traveler with its castle, churches and the palatial complex of the ruling Byzantine dynasty, bearing witness to its bygone greatness.

Sailing Across Corinth Canal

The Corinth Canal is one of the largest construction projects in the history of Greece. To avoid having ships sail around the Peloponnese, there have been many attempts to unite the two seas, since ancient times. The project of the opening of the canal of Corinth was pioneer in the 19th century, a construction dream – a challenge that lasted 2.300 years.

In July 1893 after 11 years of 2.500 workers working hard, this construction dream came true and finally this technical exploit became a reality. The Corinth Canal is about 6 kilometers long, and thousands of tourists, from all over the world, visit each year to admire this masterpiece project with the breathtaking view.

The sailing across the canal is a unique experience. The color of the water has many amazing shades of emerald and the rocks, with their sprouting bushes and pines, rise imposingly at 70 meters. The trip starts from the port of Isthmia, which is located near the exit of the canal in the Saronic Gulf, heads west towards Posidonia and returns. The trip takes about an hour.

Reaching the port, Hydra island looks glamorous like an art-paint, with grey, white and blue colors above the blue of the sea, an exemplar of architectonics and aesthetics. The town of Hydra island, which is the center of the whole island, is built amphitheatrically around the port, combining nature and architecture.

Character and charm abound, and the island’s impressive history is evident everywhere. Many of the mansions of the leaders of the Greek Revolution, which was launched from Hydra, are today preserved and restored as hotels and museums. The entire island is designated as a National Greek Monument and the preservation order stipulates an island wide ban on cars, mopeds and bikes. Transport in the island depends on horses, mules and donkeys.

Olympia

The blessed land of Olympia, as characterized by many, is a home to the most praised sanctuary of ancient Greece, dedicated to the father of the Gods, Zeus. It is the place where the most significant games of ancient Greece, the Olympic Games, were born, which were held every four years since 776 BC in honor of Zeus, a splendid institution of nationwide importance from antiquity until today. The lighting of the Olympic flame takes place in ancient Olympia before each Olympic Game and proclaims the start of the Games.

On the archaeological site of Olympia you will visit the Temple of Zeus, which used to host the gold and ivory statue of Zeus, a work of the famous sculptor Phidias and known in antiquity as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. All around you can see temples and buildings related to the worship of the Gods, and also buildings related to the Olympic Games such as: sports facilities, additional buildings, utilitarian and administrative, but also buildings of socializing kind. The ancient Olympic stadium is one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.

Just a few meters outside the archaeological site you can find the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, which is considered one of the most important Greek museums and includes excavation findings dating from prehistoric times to the early Christian years. Some of the most important exhibits are “Hermes” of Praxiteles, the pediments of the temple of Zeus, “Nike” of Paionios and the cup that belonged to Phidias.

This beautiful lake is located in an altitude of 890 meters and is surrounded by green firs, pine and oak trees which reach the banks of the lake and create a picturesque “Swiss landscape” as it has been described by so many visitors. The highlight of this natural beauty is the small chapel of St. Fanourios, which is connected to the mainland by a thin stripe of land which literally floats on the water.
